I stopped eating red meat and poultry several years ago. Most of my diet is plant-based, but I do eat fish. I’ve found other protein sources, and just turning 79, I surprisingly discovered the people my age need more protein in their diet. One can of herring filets has 26 grams of protein, about half of required protein for my age, which I fill in with other sources like low-fat cottage cheese, nuts, nut butters, smoothies with pea protein powder, and beans. It can be done.
One additional point on the topic of ensuring adequate protein intake is the inverse association with frailty. Prospective, randomized controlled trials for nutrition based studies are not always easy to conduct so most of this info is from retrospective analysis. However, the trend seems to hold up overall, particularly in both men and women over 80 or 85. As you have correctly noted, the more one consumes proteins from non-red meat sources, the better it is for overall health.
Although I was raised a vegetarian and started consuming poultry and sea food, have stopped the former except for the rare indulgence of hot buffalo wings with beers when meeting friends in neighboring water holes. However, my wife and I have been including a serving of fish (we both love sea food) once a week - usually salmon or trout and occasionally cod, tilapia, catfish. Having said that, it is not necessary if one wants to be exclusively vegetarian as long as there is sufficient intake from plant based sources.
Honestly, I think the way chickens are raised and slaughtered is so horrible that I don’t care to eat chicken if I can avoid it.
I don’t think agribusiness does anything much better raising and slaughtering beef.
I’m looking for local farmers for my source. I don’t like paying more, but I think it’s worth it. Supporting local farmers makes much more sense to me.

Go plant based and save our environment

I am not completely sure if plant sources can be a 1 for 1 replacement for a fish based diet. Fish certainly seems to be a superfood
